Harana | Traditional Courtship

Written By Mr. Herbs on 02 March, 2011 | March 02, 2011

The harana or serenade is the song or music performed one night from outside the home of the person being honored or courted . It is usually performed by a male lover at the bottom of the window of the house of the woman he is courting. He offers music and song for his lover, so that he can win the heart of the one he is wooing and in love with. It usually takes place in the provinces . The singing voice of the male lover is also often accompanied by music from a guitar .

Harana was an exclusively nocturnal practice. Due to the daytime tropical weather, the evening offers respite from the heat, a time when everybody comes alive, full of romantic ideas, and as is typical of Filipino nature, always ready to enjoy the company of friends and loved ones. It was during this old Philippines, before the widespread use of electricity, that harana was at its ripest.
